Mastering Gold Coast’s Fishing Secrets

Navigating the Gold Coast for a fishing expedition can be a challenging yet rewarding experience, especially when facing unpredictable weather conditions. As the persistent Southerly winds and showers persist, this report aims to guide anglers through the best strategies, locations, and bait choices to make the most out of their fishing ventures.

Unravelling the Inshore Haven

Strategic Retreat to Sheltered Waters

While the South-easterly winds and showers have persisted throughout the week, sticking to sheltered inshore waters has proven to be a successful strategy. As the upcoming weekend mirrors the past weather patterns, anglers are encouraged to explore rivers and sheltered waterways for a promising catch, with Whiting topping the list.

Locations: Tweed River, Tallebudgera Creek, Currumbin Creek, Nerang River, Coomera River (both south and north arms), Pimpama River, Jacobs Well, and the Logan River.

With the salinity levels improving, Whiting enthusiasts can expect quality catches in these sheltered areas. The upcoming new moon will bring significant tides, enhancing the Whiting chase. Recommended baits include a mix of live Bloodworms, Beachworms, and Yabbies.

Daytime and Nighttime Tactics

While daytime fishing has seen improvement in the Broadwater and Jumpinpin, nighttime expeditions remain fruitful during March. As the weather cools down, daytime fishing is expected to become more rewarding. Be prepared to move around if the bite is slow, and patience is key when fishing for Whiting. Optimal gear includes a long, sensitive rod paired with a small spinning reel or Alvey side cast, spooled with 6 to 9lb mono, and a 6lb fluorocarbon leader.

Offshore Challenges and Opportunities

Weather Windows and Reef Species Bounty

Limited weather windows have posed challenges for offshore excursions. However, early-bird fishos last weekend were rewarded with a mixed bag of reef species. It’s crucial to note the ongoing closure for southern waters regarding Spanish Mackerel, ending on 21/3/2024.

Prime Offshore Locations

Once the wind and swell conditions improve, heading south to Mermaid Reef, Palm Beach Reef, and The Gravel Patch can be highly rewarding for Spotted Mackerel. The 18 and 24 fathom reefs have witnessed impressive catches of Jewfish, Snapper, Trag Jew, Maori Cod, Moses Perch, Spangled Emperor, and Tusk Fish.

Bait Choices for Offshore Success

Best baits for offshore adventures include WA Pilchards, Whole Squid, Mullet Fillet, Bonito Fillet, and Live Yakka’s and Slimy Mackerel.

Mud Crab Adventures: A Tasty Alternative

Feeding Time for Mud Crabs

With big tides from the new moon and fresh rain stirring the waters, this weekend offers an excellent opportunity to chase Mud Crabs. Strategically placing pots in sheltered locations can enhance the chances of a successful catch.

Top Mud Crab Spots and Baits

Prime locations for Mud Crabbing include Tweed River, Tallebudgera Creek, Currumbin Creek, Coomera River (both South and North Arms), Pimpama River, Jacobs Well, Tiger Mullet Channel, Cabbage Tree Point, and the Logan River. Utilize Whole Mullet, Fish Frames, and Raw Chicken Pieces as bait, and consider using a bait bag to ward off smaller fish, eels, and crabs.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, strategic planning, the right gear, and a bit of patience can make fishing on the Gold Coast a rewarding experience. Always stay updated with the latest weather forecasts, adapt to changing conditions, and make the most of the diverse opportunities these coastal waters have to offer.

Quotes From The Boats

Brad from Brad Smith Fishing Charters reports:

“The water clarity in the Tweed River is really starting to clear up after so much early season rain. The deep holes are at present loaded with baitfish being herring and the predatory fish are taking advantage of this smorgasbord of food. One of the main species that are patrolling and marauding the bait are Giant Trevally and they should hang around now right through to May if the conditions continue and we don’t receive any more heavy rainfalls. The other species caught this week were Flatties, Beam, Grunter, School Jew and small Mangrove Jacks.”

Clint from Gold Coast River Charters reports:

Yet another week of hot weather and a bounty of big Summer Whiting again in the Nerang River. It was good to see some stable weather with light breezes and brief rain showers. Once again, the big Whiting have been the dominant species, but they are not a fish we ever get tired of catching. There has also been a lot of Trevally, Grunter, and Tarwhine in the river, even during the small neap tides. The fish are gradually moving back up Nerang River as the water slowly clears. Hinze dam is still spilling, with the official level at 101.3 %. New moon is on 10 March, the small tides will grow as the week goes on. Low tide gets later in the day too, which will be good for morning fishing as the run out is bigger than the run in. More run will mean more fun.

Gavin from Sea Probe Fishing Charters reports:

There has been good catches of Spotted Mackerel over the last week in close casting small slugs working the best, also at the fads still few nice size Dolphin Fish getting around also few Jew in close.

Navigating the Weekend Waters: A Comprehensive Fishing Report for Gold Coast

Dave McDonald had a great day off the Gold Coast landing this impressive Spanish Mackerel
Dave McDonald had a great day off the Gold Coast landing this impressive Spanish Mackerel

As anglers, we’ve relished in a week of ideal conditions on the Gold and Tweed Coasts – a sequence of light winds and sunshine creating the perfect canvas for fruitful fishing endeavors. As we peer into the approaching weekend, however, the weather gods seem to be challenging our aspirations with a forecast of changing winds and swells. Nonetheless, there are still windows of opportunity for those who seize the moment.

Weekend Weather Outlook

A Forecast Twist from the North Our recent luck with mild weather appears to be on the wane, with northly winds predicted to gain momentum on Saturday. Yet, hope lingers in a small weather window Sunday morning before the winds regain their strength, joined by a robust southerly change and heightened swell in the upcoming week. Keep abreast of the latest weather updates to make informed decisions before embarking on your fishing journey.

Reef Action on the Gold Coast

A Bounty of Predators Reef fishing enthusiasts have enjoyed a bountiful week, courtesy of abundant bait schools drawing in a diverse array of predators. Tuna, Spotted Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, and Sharks have all made appearances. Despite the impending weather challenges, offshore fishing opportunities persist during the weekend mornings. Noteworthy catches include a stunning Spanish Mackerel near the Seaway, with insights into effective trolling and live baiting techniques.

Bottom Fishing Bonanza

Snapper, Trag Jew, and More Venturing to the 18 and 24 fathom reefs has proven to be a cornucopia of delights, yielding Snapper, Trag Jew, Maori Cod, Moses Perch, Tuskies, and Silver Jew. For the more adventurous angler, the 36 and 50 fathom lines promise Dolphin Fish, Snapper, Pearl Perch, Trag Jew, Tusk Fish, Yellow Tail Kingfish, and Amberjack – conditions permitting.

Whiting Wonders

Sheltered Spots and Nighttime Success The allure of quality Whiting persists around the Gold Coast and Tweed waterways, with an enticing suggestion for the upcoming week – finding a sheltered bend in a river for a rewarding feed. The nocturnal angler is advised to seek out the best catches, although daytime sessions are gradually gaining traction with the onset of autumn. Key spots for Whiting include the Tweed River, Currumbin Creek, Tallebudgera Creek, and more. Live bait, featuring Bloodworms, Beach Worms, and Yabbies, is the recommended approach. Factor in the tidal flow, ensuring the right balance between a light setup and a sufficiently substantial sinker.

Pursuing Mangrove Jack

Hot Spots and Tactics The recent sultry weather has provided an excellent backdrop for Mangrove Jack pursuit, and anglers have been rewarded with impressive catches. Canal systems connected to the Nerang River, Runaway Bay, and Paradise Point have been particularly productive during this season. Prospective anglers can also explore the Tweed River, Tallebudgera Creek, Currumbin Creek, Coomera River, Jacobs Well, and the Logan River in their quest for a trophy fish. Effective tactics include casting an assortment of diving and surface lures or soft plastics. However, for those seeking a less labor-intensive approach, live or dead baits are a reliable alternative. Additionally, the report notes the incidental captures of nice-sized Trevally and Estuary Cod in the same areas, adding to the excitement of the expedition.

As the seasons shift and we embrace autumn, anglers are presented with an array of fishing options despite the unpredictable weather forecasts. Armed with this comprehensive report, anglers can strategize their weekend endeavors, capitalizing on brief weather windows and optimizing their chances for a memorable catch. Whether casting lines off the reefs, chasing Whiting in the shallows, or pursuing Mangrove Jack in the estuaries, may your weekend on the Gold and Tweed Coasts be filled with thrilling moments and abundant catches.

Sea Probe Fishing Charters have been finding some fantastic quality Jewfish offshore on the Gold Coast for their happy customers

The Tweed River is starting to fish well now with the salinity levels slowly increasing after the huge amount of constant rain we have received this year. The early morning run in tides have been producing the best results which is good as we have run in tides to start my trips this week. The species caught this week were a few small Mangrove Jacks, Bream, Flathead, Grunter and School Jew. We also lost a couple of expensive lures through being bitten off by big Tailor. It is a bit uncommon to find Tailor in the river at this time of the year as they usually arrive through our winter months. The locals I have been talking too have said that they are doing alright on the Mud Crabs at present so if you are planning a trip to the Tweed it might be worth setting a couple of pots. Once again be cautious when navigating the Tweed at the present particularly around the top of the tide as there is still some logs and debris floating around.

Gavin from Sea Probe Fishing Charters reports:

“The fishing has been quite hard leading up to this last full moon, plenty of tide out wide. Best options to stay in close chase Spotted Mackerel, Spanish and Jew off the Gold Coast.”

Whiting Whispers and Mackerel Mysteries

Bec did well catching this nice solid Flathead on a Zerek Fishtrap Lure

Last weekend’s wet and windy conditions didn’t deter avid fishos, and this week, the Southern Broadwater was the place to be. Lucky anglers reaped the rewards with quality Whiting catches, proving that sometimes braving the elements pays off. As we gear up for the weekend, let’s delve into the latest fishing escapades.

Chasing Whiting – The Southern Broadwater Hotspots

The stretch from Sundale Bridge to Paradise Point in the Southern Broadwater proved to be a Whiting haven this week. Successful anglers employed the strategy of exploring various depths and targeting areas with significant tidal flow. Live bait, including Yabbies, Beachworms, and Bloodworms, worked wonders. Wave Break Island, Crab Island, Paradise Point, Coomera River, Nerang River, and Pimpama River were hotspots. For those with a knack for precision, Jacobs Well Shoals, Bedrooms, Tiger Mullet Channel, and the Logan River offered promising Whiting grounds. Light gear, sensitive rods, and patience were the key ingredients to a successful Whiting quest.

In the pursuit of Whiting, patience is a virtue. Allow the fish to take the bait for as long as possible before striking, ensuring a higher chance of hooking up. Bream, Tarwhine, and Grunter were also active, adding a dash of variety to the catches.

Mackerel Mania – A Dash Offshore

Once the offshore conditions calm down, an exciting Mackerel season awaits. Ben, as seen in the photo, capitalized on a favourable weather window, securing a bountiful catch of Spotted Mackerel off the Gold Coast. As the wind and swell subside, enthusiasts can explore prime Mackerel spots such as Palm Beach Reef, The Gravel Patch, Mermaid Reef, and the 18-fathom reefs off Southport. Keep an eye out for surface action, diving birds, and bait schools, all signalling the presence of Mackerel. With the recent end to the Spanish Mackerel closure, local fishos can add this prized species back to their target list.

Navigating the Spanish Seas

For those keen on Spanish Mackerel, it’s time to embark on a hunt within the inshore reef systems. Trolling a mix of diving and skirted lures can cover ground, while a keen eye on the sounder for bait and predator activity is essential. The 18 and 24-fathom reefs have seen a mix of Snapper, Moses Perch, Trag Jew, Maori Cod, and Silver Jew. Venturing further to the 36 and 50-fathom lines promises exciting hauls of Snapper, Pearl Perch, Trag Jew, Yellow Tail Kingfish, and Amberjack. Prime baits include WA Pilchards, Whole Large Squid, Mullet Fillet, Bonito Fillet, and Mac Tuna Fillet.

Fads and Beyond

Fads have been teeming with Dolphin Fish, and trolling in these areas has also yielded larger Dolphin Fish, Wahoo, and the occasional Marlin.

Mud Crab Mysteries Unveiled

Delicious fresh crab caught from and prepared onboard a Coomera Houseboat.

The recent rain and storms have stirred up the creeks and rivers, making Mud Crabs an enticing target. With more fresh water flowing, anglers are advised to move their pots strategically. Starting upriver and gradually shifting towards river mouths as catch rates dictate can optimize the Mud Crab haul. The North and South arms of the Coomera River, Pimpama River, Tipplers Passage, Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, Logan River, Canaipa Passage, and around Russel Island have all yielded satisfying catches. Whole Mullet and fish frames, regularly changed for freshness, prove to be irresistible baits.

In conclusion, despite challenging weather forecasts, the fishing scene has been vibrant. From Whiting in the Broadwater to Mackerel offshore and Mud Crabs in the creeks, anglers have found success by adapting to the conditions and employing clever strategies. As we head into the weekend, it’s a reminder to stay informed on the latest weather updates and to seize every opportunity for a memorable fishing adventure.

Quotes From The Boats

Clint from Gold Coast River Charters reports:

More rain arrived this week, during a summer that was forecast to be dry. Anyway, rain is good. Rain is great for fishing! At Tweed River Brad will keep chasing Mangrove Jacks, Mulloway, Flathead, and other estuary species using lures only. The Gold Coast Broadwater and Nerang continues to fish very well most days for big Sand Whiting, and Flathead have been returning in the slightly cooler water. There are also Trevally, Flounder, Sand Crabs, and lots of Bream on offer. Small tidal flow this coming week will make it a challenge to catch fish. Try fishing the areas that normally run too hard in the middle of tides like the seaway area and narrow parts of the rivers.

There has been great catches of Dolphin Fish, mostly caught on live bait and pilchards from the fads. Also, along the 50-fathom line plenty of Snapper on float lining and bottom bashers using whole pilchards and mullet fillet.

Gold Coast Weekend Fishing Forecast

Pam Brigginshaw caught a great feed of quality Whiting on the Gold Coast last week
Pam Brigginshaw caught a great feed of quality Whiting on the Gold Coast last week

The past weekend on the Tweed and Gold Coast was marked by wet and windy conditions, followed by more moderate southeasterly winds and showers throughout the week. Although the swell has subsided somewhat, we anticipate some swell and showers as we approach the upcoming weekend. Inshore waters will be the most viable option unless offshore wind and swell conditions improve. It’s always advisable to have the latest weather forecast before setting out.

Whiting in Abundance

Brett Van Latham had a great night catching a nice feed of big Whiting
Brett Van Latham had a great night catching a nice feed of big Whiting

The Broadwater has seen a surge in Whiting numbers over the past few weeks, with anglers reeling in impressive catches. This increase is largely due to the heavy rainfall during the summer months, which has driven additional schools of Whiting from local rivers into the Broadwater in search of higher quality water.

Anglers have reported good catches in the channels from the Sundale bridge north to Paradise Point, with yabbies proving to be the most effective bait, followed by beach worms. As water quality gradually improves, we expect the rivers to yield better Whiting catches and fewer undesirable species like catfish and pony fish.

When targeting Whiting, a light 7 to 9-foot rod with a sensitive tip is recommended, paired with a small reel loaded with 6 to 9lb mono. A long 6lb fluorocarbon leader, a size 3 to 5 ball sinker (depending on the current), and a size 4 to 6 bait holder hook are ideal for your chosen bait. Live Bloodworms, Beachworms, and Yabbies are the best baits.

Flathead Fishing Post-Rain

Shane had a good day catching a nice Flathead for dinner in the Broadwater
Shane had a good day catching a nice Flathead for dinner in the Broadwater

With an abundance of bait in the main waterways following the rain, Flathead fishing is a promising option. The water quality near the ocean entrances has been the best and is a good starting point. A variety of lures including soft plastics, soft vibes, metal vibes, surface lures for shallow areas, and diving lures can be used to cover ground.

If you’re fishing on an incoming tide, the bait will likely move onto the tops of sandbanks and the shallow edges close to drop-offs. These are prime areas to focus your efforts when targeting Flathead. Observing bait behaviour can also provide valuable clues; if you notice bait acting skittish or being attacked by predators, you’re likely in a good area.

If you’re interested in trolling, it’s best to troll with the current whenever possible. Flathead are primarily ambush feeders and tend to position themselves headfirst into the current for a clean strike at baitfish. Trolling against the current can result in missed strikes as the Flathead will have to turn around to attack, potentially leading to a large number of missed fish.

Yakka Schools in Gold Coast Seaway

The Gold Coast Seaway has been teeming with yakka schools feeding on the surface. Anglers who can secure these excellent live baits have a high chance of catching a diverse range of species.

There have been consistent catches of Mangrove Jack and School Jew from the hole on the North Wall and around the pipeline. Anglers have also landed some nice Tailor, Trevally, Squire, Flathead, Bream, and Tarwhine.

Successful Crabbing: Sand Crabs and Mud Crabs

Sand crabs caught while on a houseboat holiday with Coomera Houseboats
Sand crabs caught while on a houseboat holiday with Coomera Houseboats

Anglers have reported good hauls of both Sand Crabs and Mud Crabs over the past week. If you’re targeting Sand Crabs, try your luck along the edges of most main channels and weed edges of sandbanks around the Broadwater and Jumpinpin. These areas are ideal for targeting Sand Crabs as they move through with the tide.

The rivers have started to produce some nice catches of Mud Crabs since the flush out. Try your luck in the Tweed River, Currumbin Creek, Coomera River, Pimpama River, Neverfails, Tipplers Passage, Jacobs Well, Tiger Mullet Channel, Cabbage Tree Point, Logan River, Russell Island, and Karragarra Island. Fresh Mullet, Fish Frames, and Raw Chicken make great baits.

Mixed Catches Despite Weather Challenges

It was encouraging to witness favorable weather conditions over the past weekend, allowing anglers to seize the opportunity and reel in some rewarding catches. Despite the wind’s strength, fishing enthusiasts maximized the improved conditions, enjoying fruitful outings and securing noteworthy fish. However, as I compose this report, the outlook for the upcoming weekend seems less promising, with forecasts indicating an increase in southeastern winds and offshore swells. Nevertheless, sheltered inshore waters remain viable options for those eager to brave intermittent rain showers. As always, it is advisable to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts before embarking on any fishing expedition. Let’s delve into the highlights of this week’s fishing activity.

Seaway Action: Mangrove Jack and School Jewfish Highlights

The Gold Coast Seaway has been bustling with activity in recent days, with anglers encountering substantial catches of high-quality Mangrove Jack and sizable school Jewfish, serving as the primary target species. Additionally, the Seaway has been teeming with abundant schools of bait, making it an ideal location to pursue a diverse array of voracious predators. Mangrove Jack and Jewfish have been congregating in significant numbers, particularly around the North Wall and the pipeline. As noted in previous reports, anglers seeking larger, hard-fighting fish are advised to upscale their gear to mitigate the risk of opportunistic sharks intercepting their prized catches. Furthermore, a variety of other species, including Queenfish, Tailor, Trevally, Spangled Emperor, Grassy Sweetlip, Bream, Tarwhine, and Flathead, may also be encountered in the area. Optimal fishing times coincide with the first couple of hours preceding and following a tide change, minimizing the impact of strong currents. Additionally, monitoring swell conditions is recommended for those planning weekend fishing excursions.

Crab Hauls in Broadwater and Jumpinpin

These mud crabs are not muddy - nor are they crabby
These mud crabs are not muddy – nor are they crabby

With water quality showing signs of improvement in the Broadwater and around Jumpinpin, anglers have reported successful hauls of Sand Crabs along the edges of main channels in both regions. In the Broadwater, productive areas include Wave Break Island, Crab Island, and the Aldershots, while around Jumpinpin, promising spots encompass the Neverfails, Bedrooms, Canaipa, and the mouth of Tiger Mullet Channel. Furthermore, Mud Crabs continue to be plentiful, with notable locations including the Coomera River, Pipmapa River, Brown Island, Tipplers Passage, Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, Logan River, Russell Island, and Karragarra Island. Preferred baits for Mud Crabs include mullet, fish frames, and raw chicken pieces.

Offshore Outlook: Spanish Mackerel Closure and Varied Catches

Once the wind and swell conditions stabilize, anglers will eagerly resume offshore expeditions. However, it’s essential to note that the first closure period for Spanish Mackerel in southeast waters commenced on February 1st, 2024, and will persist until February 21st, 2024, followed by a subsequent closure from March 1st, 2024, to March 21st, 2024. Prior to the onset of southeastern winds, anglers managed to secure satisfying catches throughout the week. Beyond coastal waters, a few Marlin have been captured while trolling lures along the 50 to 100 fathom line. Closer to shore, the presence of small Black Marlin has been inconsistent. Targeting bait schools within the 36 to 50 fathom line with skirted lures or live bait may yield favorable results. Depending on prevailing currents, anglers have enjoyed diverse catches, including Snapper, Pearl Perch, Job Fish, Yellow Tail Kingfish, Amberjack, and Dolphin Fish, primarily on the 50 fathom reefs. Additionally, the 36-fathom line has proven fruitful, yielding catches of Snapper, Pearl Perch, Tusk Fish, Trag Jew, and Dolphin Fish. Despite intermittent challenges posed by wind, swell, and currents, fishing efforts have remained productive, with notable catches recorded at the 18 and 24 fathom reefs, comprising Snapper, Moses Perch, Tusk Fish, Trag Jew, Maori Cod, and Sliver Jew.

By adapting to prevailing conditions and strategically selecting fishing locations, anglers continue to enjoy rewarding experiences along the Gold Coast, demonstrating resilience and proficiency in pursuit of their passion for angling.

Quotes from the Boats

Brett Doolan had a great day catching and releasing this quality Gold Coast Mangrove Jack
Brett Doolan had a great day catching and releasing this quality Gold Coast Mangrove Jack

Brad from Brad Smith Fishing Charters reports

This week was once again about utilizing the hot humid weather to chase some Mangrove Jacks. The jacks thrive through our summer months, and I like to focus heavily on them from now until April. Most of our bites came from very early morning starts coinciding with the tide changes. We caught some small fish and landed a few good ones and got destroyed by a few monsters, so it was a pretty expensive week due to lure losses. At the end of the day if you are not losing a few lures to snags or monster Jacks scrapping you up in the snags you are probably not fishing for the red devils properly.

Clint from Gold Coast River Charters reports

Another week of awesome fishing with the Sand Whiting hanging around in the biggest numbers I’ve ever seen. Usually, this time of year wading is the best way to catch lots of Whiting during the day. For three weeks straight now, we have been catching 20-70 fish per day by drifting the Broadwater in the one to three metre depth range. There are also numbers of beautiful quality Blue Swimmer Crabs on the days we take the pots. A feed of quality sized sand whiting and sand crabs is very hard to beat! There is also a large mass of big Tarwhine and Bream around TSS. The run-out tides are ideal and getting bigger with king tides later in the week. There will be some great fishing periods. Options include wading and drifting for Whiting, trolling the Southern Broadwater, vibes, soft plastics like the new Fish Craft Dr Prawn as well as move in to prawn season.

Ideal Conditions Await Anglers this Weekend

Offshore Adventures

Geoff Meredith had a good night out catching a great feed of Whiting in the Nerang River whilst on holidays from Tasmania

As we approach the weekend, the Gold and Tweed Coast are finally catching a break from the relentless rain and heat that has tested the resilience of local fishers in recent weeks. At the time of writing, the weather forecast promises a fantastic turn, providing a much-needed two-day window of favourable conditions for offshore fishing. It’s the first such opportunity we’ve seen in a long time, with light winds and a small swell predicted for both Saturday and Sunday.

Spotty Mackerel and Spanish Action

Close to shore, promising catches of Spotted Mackerel have been reported from Palm Beach Reef, The Gravel Patch, Mermaid Reef, and the Bait Grounds SE of the Seaway entrance. Techniques like slow trolling with rigged WA Pilchards, small diving lures, or skirted lures have proven effective in locating feeding predators. For Spanish Mackerel, the Gravel Patch, 18-fathom reef off the Seaway, and the 24’s have shown some activity. Trolling diving lures and, once concentrated, slow trolling live baits are recommended, adhering to the new bag limits.

Marlin Expectations and Fads for Dolphin Fish

The Marlin scene has been moderate, with a few catches reported, but expectations are high for the weekend. Fads have held some Dolphin Fish, offering an exciting opportunity for those keen on a satisfying catch, provided the currents permit.

Reef Bounty in Varied Depths

In deeper waters, the 50 and 36 fathom reefs have yielded a diverse catch including Snapper, Jobfish, Pear Perch, Tusk Fish, Yellow Tail Kingfish, Amberjack, and Trag Jew. Closer to shore, the 18 and 24 fathom reefs have seen good-sized Snapper, Spangled Emperor, Silver Jewfish, Trag Jew, Moses Perch, Maori Cod, and a few Spotted and Spanish Mackerel.

Mangrove Jack Triumphs Amidst Challenging Conditions

Despite less-than-ideal conditions this season, there’s been a welcome surge in quality Mangrove Jack catches around the Gold Coast. The persistent rain and runoff haven’t deterred these aggressive red fish. Exploring the Coomera River, particularly upstream and along the South arm, has proven fruitful. Casting or trolling lures along rock walls, pontoons, and bridges can be rewarding for those pursuing the Mangrove Jack thrill.

River Adventures – Tweed, Nerang, and More

The Tweed River, Nerang River, Runaway Bay Canals, Paradise Point bridges, Ephraim Island, Sovereign Island, and the Gold Coast Seaway offer diverse opportunities for river fishing. Live or dead bait fishing, with options like Live Herring, Yakka’s, Mullet, Garfish, Pike, Mullet Fillet, and WA Pilchards, has been effective. The Gold Coast Seaway has delivered impressive Mangrove Jack and Jewfish catches, with caution advised due to occasional unpredictable swell conditions.

Whiting on the Rise

As water quality improves, Whiting fishing is gaining momentum. Last Thursday night in the Nerang River, a successful expedition yielded a great feed of Whiting, including a notable 39.5cm catch. Given the current in the system, anglers may need to navigate through Tarwhine, Bream, Stingrays, and Catfish to locate Whiting schools. Suggested spots include Wavebreak Island, Crab Island, Paradise Point, South Arm of the Coomera, Pimpama River, Jacobs Well, Bedrooms, Tiger Mullet Channel, and Cabbage Tree Point. Baits like Blood Worms, Beach Worms, and Yabbies are recommended, with a reminder to fish light and allow the fish to fully engage with the bait before attempting a hook.

Quotes from the Boats

Brad from Brad Smith Fishing Charters reports

This week was all about very early morning starts to beat the heat and utilize the tide changes to chase a few jacks. The start of the run-in tide especially when it is on grey light which at this time of the year is around 4.30 am to 5.30 am is the perfect corridor for me to target Jacks. I started my Jack campaign last Sunday afternoon with a cold beer in my shed and a maintenance program on my reels and a change of new heavy-duty hooks and split rings on my favourite Jack lures. Monday morning which is usually my only day off the water I decided to go on an early morning solo mission, and it was successful. So, to cut a long story short I have focused on catching Jacks for my clients this week with some great results and heart-breaking bust offs which comes from targeting the red devils.

Wet and Windy Fishing Adventures on the Gold Coast

Wet and Windy Fishing Adventures on the Gold Coast

We’ve braved another wet and windy week on the Gold and Tweed Coasts during the school holidays. With limited weather windows, anglers have had to don their wet weather gear for a chance to cast their lines. Despite the challenging conditions, this weekend holds promise, with Sunday emerging as the optimal day for fishing adventures. Stay updated with the latest weather forecast before heading out.

Bull Sharks on the Rise – A Thrilling Fishing Option

You can eat them, but they make better shark bait!
You can eat them, but they make better shark bait!

Recent rainfall has stirred up the local Bull Shark population, making them an exciting target for anglers. Regardless of water conditions, Bull Sharks are known for their ability to sniff out bait. Whether fishing from the shore or a boat, a basic medium to heavy estuary outfit is will do the job on most of the average sized Sharks you will encounter. I usually use 20 to 30 lb mono or braid for the main line, a length of 60lb mono leader then attached to a nylon coated wire trace from 100 to 150lb about 80 to 100cm depending on the length of the rod to make casting easy and the either a circle or normal J style hook from 6/0 to 9/0 depending on the bait. When using a circle hook make sure you run a loose drag, when the shark starts to run with the bait count to 30 then slowly tighten the drag up and hopefully the circle hook will find its place in the corner of the jaw of the fish. Best baits to use are freshwater eel, pike eel, mullet, or bonito. If you are using eel, a 10 to 15cm piece is sufficient – just make sure you have good hook exposure when rigging the bait.

Some good spots to try your luck are the Tweed River, Currumbin Creek, Tallebudgera Creek, Nerang River, Coomera River, Pimpama River, Aldershots, Never Fails Islands, Jacobs Well, Logan River and around Russell and Karragarra Islands.

Whiting Quest – Easing Rain Offers Prime Opportunities

As the rain starts to ease, anglers can turn their attention to Whiting. Explore the Nerang River and Pimpama River, where runoff is less prominent. Other spots to consider where the water quality will be looking much better are the Tweed River (closer to the mouth), Wave Break Island, Crab Island, Bedrooms, Millionaires Row and the mouth of Tiger Mullet Channel. Bloodworms will make the best bait especially up the rivers. Beachworms and yabbies will work better in the Broadwater and Jumpinpin where there are larger numbers of natural yabby banks. Fish as light as possible, 7 to 9ft rod with a soft tip, 6 to 9lb mono main line, 6lb fluorocarbon trace, 3 to 5ball sinker depending on the flow (due to the big tides at the moment), and a bait holder hook to suit the bait on your choice.

School Jewfish and Mangrove Jack Bonanza at Gold Coast Seaway

Beau Bevege had a great day catching and releasing this fantastic 80cm Flathead on the Tweed River
Beau Bevege had a great day catching and releasing this fantastic 80cm Flathead on the Tweed River

The Gold Coast Seaway has become a hotspot for quality school Jewfish and impressive Mangrove Jack. . Drifting live baits is the most productive method to target these awesome fish. Live Yakkas, Slimy Mackerel, Pike, Mullet or Herring are the pick of the baits. If possible, try to time your trip around a tide change which will also coincide with the best bite time. Usually around an hour before and an hour after the tide change is the most productive window. Have a good look for life on the sounder. If you can find bait schooling up or mark a big fish on the sounder that will be a good place to start. I encourage you to fish with a bit heavier gear in the Seaway; if you are too slow to land your fish, the sharks will beat you every time, as they also school up in the same area ready to take an easy feed from fishos. The pipeline and the hole on the end of the North wall are usually the best spots to target.

Bream Frenzy After the Rain – Perfect for Family Fishing

Bream have been around in good numbers following the recent deluge of rain, as they seem to feed well with the extra fresh water in the system and fishos have been catching plenty this week. Bream will eat pretty much anything you choose to use as bait and can be found schooling up in good numbers around most canal entrances, bridges, jetties, pontoons, rock walls and snags like fallen trees. Find the right structure and you should do well, it pays to use a bit of burley to fire them up, pellets will normally work well. They are a great target species for the kids to chase on school holidays.

The water has started to clear in the Gold Coast Broadwater, but the Nerang River is still quite muddy after more rain fell over the catchment. Run in tides have been the best times to fish, with Whiting, Grunter, Jewies, Tarwhine, and Bream the main species biting on yabbies and beach worms in the Bundall to Capri area.

Challenging Conditions and Freshwater Run-off Impact Gold Coast

The Gold and Tweed Coasts faced continued storms and heavy rainfall, causing rivers to be inundated with runoff and making inshore fishing challenging. Offshore trips were also hindered by morning storms, emphasizing the importance of checking the latest weather forecast before heading out. As the weekend approaches, strong southeast winds and a large swell are predicted, making sheltered waters the preferred choice for anglers. Despite the rain easing to a few showers, moderate S/SE winds are expected. Anglers are advised to plan accordingly and stay updated on the evolving weather conditions.

Mud Crab Fishing Amidst Freshwater Run-off

Due to intense rainfall, local waterways are limited for fishing. Mud crab hunting becomes a favorable option, especially in the Coomera River, where significant run-off is observed. Strategic placement of pots around channel entrances and key locations such as The Aldershots, Brown Island, and Tipplers Passage is recommended. Fresh bait like Mullet, Fish Frames, and Raw Chicken is advised for a successful catch.

Targeting Bream and Spotted Grunter in Freshwater Conditions

Tyler has been catching some very nice Mud Crabs on school holidays

Despite the freshwater challenges, Bream and Spotted Grunter thrive in such environments. Fishing around pontoons, jetties, rock walls, bridges, and fallen trees proves productive. Various baits like White Pillys, WA Pillys, Mullet Fillet, Prawns, and Yabbies are effective. Key fishing areas include Tweed River, Nerang River, and Labrador Rock Walls.

Gold Coast Seaway’s Productive Run-in Tide Fishing

The Gold Coast Seaway offers promising opportunities during the run-in tide, receiving a clean saltwater flush. This attracts a variety of species, including Jewfish and Mangrove Jack around the North Wall and pipeline. Fishing during tide changes is recommended, coinciding with natural bite times. Notable catches in the Seaway include Tailor, Bream, Squire, Trevally, Spangled Emperor, and Grassy Sweetlip.

CLARKIE’S GC FISHING – Fishing Adventures on the Gold Coast After the Storm

Fishing Adventures on the Gold Coast After the Storm

The Gold and Tweed Coasts have faced relentless challenges from the weather gods since Christmas, enduring damaging storms and relentless rain. As the region grapples with widespread damage, we hope everyone is safe amidst the adversity. Despite the setbacks, the recent deluge on New Year’s Day has given the rivers a much-needed flush, setting the stage for unique angling opportunities.

Crabbing Bonanza After the Rain

With the substantial rainfall, the creeks, rivers, and estuaries have experienced a massive flush-out this week, creating ideal conditions for chasing Mud Crabs. The surge in water flow has spurred the crabs into action, making it a prime time for crabbers. Strategically setting pots at the mouth of rivers and working upstream can yield excellent results. Notable spots to try include the Coomera River, Tweed River, Tallebudgera Creek, and more. Running a bait bag with fresh fish frames, mullet, and raw chicken pieces is key to attracting larger crabs.

Pro Tip: Stay informed about regulations before heading out. Check here for the latest rules.

Chasing Black Marlin Thrills

Sea Probe Fishing Charters had a great week finding some good sized Black Marlin for there customers
Sea Probe Fishing Charters had a great week finding some good sized Black Marlin for there customers

The recent rainfall has made Mud Crab hunting a rewarding endeavour around the Gold and Tweed Coast. The increased river flow has spurred crab activity, making them more inclined to feed. To optimize your catch, set pots in various positions from upriver to down towards the river entrance. Fresh chicken pieces, mullet, and fish frames are effective baits if placed in the right crab-rich spots. Explore locations such as the Tweed River, Tallebudgera Creek, Coomera River, Pimpama River, The Never Fails, Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, Logan River, Russel Island, and Karra Garra Island for a successful crabbing experience.

Pro Tip: Experiment with baits such as WA Pilchards, Whole Squid, Mullet Fillet, live Yakka’s, and Slimy Mackerel.

Optimizing Freshwater Influx for a Diverse Catch

Given the influx of fresh water, targeting areas close to open ocean entrances is a smart strategy. The run-in tide brings a dose of saltwater from the ocean, activating the fish and washing out bait fish and prawns. Look for distinct color changes where fresh water meets saltier water, as these are prime locations for a mixed bag of species including Jewfish, Trevally, Bream, Tarwhine, Squire, Tailor, Flathead, Moses Perch, and Tarpon.

Pro Tip: Watch for tide lines for optimum fishing spots.

With the weather settling into a more favourable pattern, the weekend promises exciting opportunities for anglers to explore and make the most of the diverse marine life on the Gold and Tweed Coasts. Stay prepared, stay safe, and enjoy the adventure!

Jigging the deep holes from 8 to 13 metres in the Tweed River with a combination of zx 40 and Samaki vibelicous lures did the trick. We were also lucky that we had some early morning tide changes so the focus was to get as many runs on the board as possible during this period. Working the deep holes produced a variety of species with Flathead, Bream, Whiting, Moses Perch, Big Eye Trevally and School Jew all falling victim to our vibe lures.”

We are now definitely in peak whiting season in the Broadwater, when the tides were low enough to pump yabbies we caught heaps of fish while wading this week. When the morning tides were high, we anchored over the banks and used beach worms. While not as good as yabbies they do work for Whiting, Flathead, and Bream. This week will be more of the same, chasing the beautiful big whiting on the flats, as well as casting lures for Flathead which have been plentiful if you can find water that is around 22 degrees.

Christmas Storm Chaos and Fishing Success: Navigating the Gold Coast Waters

The weather took a wild turn on Christmas Day, starting pleasantly but ending with a massive storm wreaking havoc across the Gold Coast. The aftermath left locals with significant damage and a massive cleanup on Boxing Day. As stormy conditions persist this festive season, it’s crucial to stay updated on the weather for a safe and enjoyable time on the water. Despite the challenges, those who ventured out on the water over Christmas managed to land a satisfying feed. As we approach the weekend, showers linger, and a South Easterly wind is expected to pick up on Saturday afternoon, easing on Sunday and shifting more easterly. With New Year’s approaching, be cautious of the increased waterway traffic, and prioritize safety on the water. Always check the latest weather forecast before setting out and let’s explore the recent catches.

Offshore Pursuits: Navigating Unsettled Weather:

For those considering an offshore adventure over the weekend, an early start is recommended to avoid potential unsettled weather, including storms in the afternoon. The 18 and 24 fathom reefs have yielded impressive hauls of Snapper, Trag Jew, Silver Jew, Moses Perch, Tusk Fish, Maori Cod, Spangled Emperor, and the occasional Spotted Mackerel. Heading south, Mermaid Reef, Palm Beach Reef, and the Gravel Patch have seen catches of Spotted Mackerel, with the occasional Spanish Mackerel. Casting metal slugs has proven effective, and for bait enthusiasts, WA Pilchards and Live Yakka’s are top choices. Offshore, chasing Dolphin Fish around the fads has been successful, while Little Black Marlin fishing has been quieter, requiring time and effort, especially when trolling skirted lures.

Mud Crab Bounty After Rainfall:

Whiting Feeding Frenzy Under the Full Moon:

The favourable moon phase has created ideal conditions for Whiting fishing, especially during the full moon. Larger tides and increased river currents make it easier for Whiting to find food. Productive spots include the Tweed River, Currumbin Creek, Tallebudgera Creek, Nerang River, Wave Break Island, Crab Island, Coomera River, Pimpama River, Jacobs Well, Bedrooms, Tiger Mullet Channel, and the Logan River. Bloodworms, Beach Worms, and Yabbies are top bait choices, with nighttime sessions yielding better numbers of fish, including impressive catches ranging from 38 to 40cm. Daytime fishing remains a viable option, particularly for those looking to introduce younger kids to the joys of fishing.

Once again it was all about very early morning starts and getting off the water before the midday heat. We were also lucky enough to have early morning tide changes. If you are in the right spot and have the right lures and technique you will almost be guaranteed to get a bite around a tide change. The place to be this week on the tide changes were the deep holes as the fish are favouring the cooler water on the bottom of the holes. The species caught this week were Flatties, Bream, Whiting, Trevally and School Jew.

Clint from Brad Smith Fishing Charters/Gold Coast River Charters reports

“This week again I chased the Sand Whiting and there was also heaps of Dusky Flathead in the same areas around the seaway. We caught plenty of Whiting up to 42cm on yabbies and while there were lots of small Flathead, there were also enough legal sized ones which are great fun to catch on ultra light line. Besides fishing with yabbies in the shallow water we also spent time casting hardbody lures for Flathead and also some drifting in the deeper channels with zx’s and TT blades.”

Happy New Year to everyone, hope you stay safe and enjoy some time on the water. All the best to those that experienced storm damage over Christmas I hope you are back to normal soon.
