CLARKIE’S GC FISHING – Crabbing for Christmas

[vc_row][vc_column][stm_post_animated_image][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1703041614654{border-radius: 1px !important;}”]

Christmas Fishing Update: Spotted Mackerel, Whiting, and Crabbing Highlights

We’ve enjoyed favorable weather leading up to Christmas, offering excellent fishing conditions for enthusiasts looking to stock up on fresh seafood. As we approach the weekend, a mix of light to moderate southerly winds and occasional showers is expected, with a shift to northerly winds on Sunday. Please note the increased activity in waterways during the Christmas break, and be sure to check the latest weather forecast before heading out.

Offshore Fishing Highlights

Spotted Mackerel Bounty: For offshore anglers, the Christmas break brings exciting news as good numbers of Spotted Mackerel have made an appearance. Anglers have reported successful catches from Mermaid Reef, Palm Beach Reef, the Gravel Patch, Jumpinpin area, bait grounds, and the 18 fathom reef off the Gold Coast. To maximize your chances, keep an eye out for bait signals on the sounder, splashing on the water’s surface, and birds diving into the water—a clear indication of predators in the area. Anchoring over a good show and employing a cube burley trail with WA Pilchard or live Yakka can entice a bite. Casting a 40 to 60-gram metal slug while waiting for bites can also prove effective.

Inshore Fishing Variety

Whiting Galore: Whiting fishing has been particularly successful this summer, making them a delightful addition to Christmas menus. Consider using live bait such as Bloodworms, Beachworms, and yabbies for optimal results. A light outfit with a 7 to 9ft rod, spooled with 6 to 9lb mono, and a 6lb fluorocarbon trace is ideal. Key locations to try include the Tweed River, Tallebudgera Creek, Currumbin Creek, Nerang River, Wave Break Island, Crab Island, Coomera River, Pimpama River, Jacobs Well Shoals, Cabbage Tree Point, Bedrooms, Tiger Mullet Channel, and the Logan River.

Crabbing Success for Christmas Feasts

For those seeking a feast of fresh crabs for Christmas, crabbing has been promising. Larger tides have stirred up Mud Crabs in the Tweed River, Broadwater, and Jumpinpin waterways. To maximize your crabbing success, set pots in various depths and change baits regularly. Setting pots late in the afternoon and retrieving them early in the morning can help avoid interference from increased waterway traffic. For Sand Crabs, target main channels, varying depths, edges of sandbanks, and weed patches, using Mullet and Fish Frames as effective baits.

As we approach Christmas, seize the opportunity to reel in Spotted Mackerel offshore, land Whiting in inshore areas, and enjoy a successful crabbing venture for a festive seafood feast. Stay safe on the water and have a fantastic Christmas break!

Brad from Brad Smith Fishing Charters reports

It was another extremely hot week on the water with early morning starts ensuring that we finished before the peak of the midday heat. The fishing I must say was pretty tough with the water temperature being very warm and averaging around 28 to 29 degrees. The barometer also crashed which also adds to the fish not wanting to feed as freely. The best results this week came from focusing on jigging in the deep holes in the Tweed River. Our sounders read the surface temperature of the water and the water on the bottom of the deep holes is a bit cooler. The species caught this week were Flatties, Whiting, Bream and a couple of small School Jew.

Clint from Brad Smith Fishing Charters/Gold Coast River Charters reports

Some tough fishing this week too with the river getting hot temperatures and low air pressure persisting. The Sand Whiting were the mainstay with some quality ones up to 41cm caught in the Nerang River on worms and Samaki Redic 50 lures, and on yabbies in the Broadwater. There are surprising numbers of Arrow Squid around still, and not bad size. Unusual for this time of year but they were a welcome bycatch while we were chasing Winter Whiting and Flathead in the deeper channels of the Broadwater using blade lures. The crabbing has dropped off around here lately, with less Blue Swimmers and mostly undersize and female Mud Crabs. More rain from storms and the next full moon lead up should trigger more activity. The big tides typical around Christmas time drop off later this week, and low tides get later into the morning. This is what I like when targeting Whiting and Flathead around the seaway area.

Changing Weather and Exciting Catches: A Week in Fishing Adventures

The past week has provided excellent fishing conditions with light winds and a moderate swell, allowing anglers to seize the opportunity to chase a satisfying feed. However, a shift in the weather pattern is on the horizon as we approach the weekend, with stronger north winds and the possibility of showers or storms. Seek sheltered waters until the winds ease, and as always, stay informed with the latest weather forecast before embarking on your fishing trip.

Tidal Bounty for Whiting Enthusiasts

Tommy did well landing a great feed of Whiting from the Nerang River
Tommy did well landing a great feed of Whiting from the Nerang River

With the new moon bringing larger tides, this is an opportune time for anglers to target Whiting, especially with the forecasted increase in wind for the weekend. Whiting thrive in increased tidal flow, making it essential to choose the right sinker to keep bait on the bottom where these tasty fish feed. Stick to a simple tackle setup with a 7 to 9ft light rod, a small reel spooled with 6 to 9lb main line, 6lb fluorocarbon trace, a small bait holder hook, and a sinker ranging from 3 to 5 balls based on flow. Optimize your chances by fishing in areas like the Tweed River, Currumbin Creek, Tallebudgerra Creek, Nerang River, Wave Break Island, Crab Island, Paradise Point, Coomera River, Pimpama River, Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, Bedrooms, and the Logan River. Nighttime fishing is recommended for larger catches during the summer months.

Offshore Pursuits

Pelagic Action and Inshore Bounty: As Christmas approaches, offshore conditions are intensifying, with strong currents and rising water temperatures signaling the time for trolling skirted lures, diving lures, and live or dead baits. Keep an eye out for key indicators such as changes in water color, current lines, temperature shifts, bait schools on the sounder, and diving birds when venturing to the 36 or 50 fathom lines. Closer to shore, the 18 and 24 fathom reefs promise a mixed bag of Snapper, Moses Perch, Trag Jew, Tusk Fish, Maori Cod, Spangled Emperor, and substantial Silver Jewfish. An early start and monitoring wind and swell conditions are crucial for a successful outing.

Family-Friendly Fishing and Crabbing During School Holidays

With school holidays underway, it’s an ideal time to introduce kids to the joys of fishing and crabbing. Whether land-based or from a boat, consider the age and experience level of the youngsters. Local tackle stores can provide the necessary gear and recommend suitable spots. Land-based activities around jetties or sandy beaches offer opportunities to catch Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Trevally, Tarwhine, Butter Bream, and more. Don’t forget to drop a crab pot for a chance at Mud Crabs or Blue Swimmers in the area.

Quotes from the Boats

Brad from Brad Smith Fishing Charters reports:

“It was extremely hot on the water this week, so early morning starts combined with lots of sunscreen and water was needed. The best bites also came early around the tide changes with some deep-water jigging and shallow water trolling producing the results. Flathead and Whiting were the main species caught but we also caught some Bream, Whiting and small School Jew. We were a little bit unlucky this week as we came across a couple of schools of big Giant Trevally but they went down deep and moved to quickly before we could cast some surface poppers at them. Giant Trevally move up and down the river all through the summer months, so we get plenty of opportunities to catch them over the next few months.”

“The beautiful weather this week has made it a pleasure to be on the water. We caught Mangrove Jacks, Flathead, Squid, Sand Whiting, Winter Whiting and more. The fishing has been mixed with the rivers now slowing down with the hot temperatures, making night fishing the best options upstream. The shallow flats near the seaway have been good for Flathead, Whiting and Bream during run in tides bringing in cooler ocean water. Casting hardbody lures like Samaki Redics and Daiwa double clutch have been producing the goods. New moon is on Wednesday 13 December, and the morning high tides get bigger. It looks like Cyclone Jasper will stay well North and our run of great weather will continue. I’ll likely fish the flats on the run-in tides with soft plastic and hardbody lures, and the deeper channels with vibes and blades on the run out.”

“With very strong currents out wide and on 36s it has been a little bit tough on the bottom fishing side, so try trolling for Black Marlins , Dolphin Fish and Wahoo and then if that fails try the fads. In close try for Jewfish around the tides and also some Snapper in close.

Fishing Update: A Week of Abundant Catches and Tips for the Weekend

Weather Report and Weekend Forecast

Last week’s fishing extravaganza off the Gold and Tweed Coasts was blessed with excellent weather—light winds and a gentle offshore swell. However, as we approach the weekend, a shift is expected. Stay informed with the latest weather forecast before heading out to make the most of your fishing plans.

Offshore Adventures and Catch Highlights

Photo of Brett nailing a great sized Snapper off the Gold Coast
Brett had a great trip offshore last Sunday nailing a great sized Snapper off the Gold Coast

The offshore scene provided fantastic opportunities throughout the week. Despite a strong current along the 50-fathom line, pursuing Dolphin fish on the fads proved fruitful, yielding impressive catches. While the overall number of Dolphin Fish decreased, their size compensated. Both the 50 and 36 fathom reefs continued to deliver Snapper, Pearl Perch, Yellow Tail Kingfish, Amberjack, Samson fish, and Dolphin Fish. With rising water temperatures, trolling at various depths for Wahoo, Dolphin Fish, and Marlin is recommended for an exciting catch.

Inshore Bounty and Best Bait Practices

Closer to shore, the 18 and 24 fathom reefs witnessed successful bottom fishing sessions, including a notable Snapper haul. Early mornings are optimal for the sunrise bite time. In shallower waters, Trag Jew, Moses Perch, Tusk Fish, Maori Cod, Jewfish, and the occasional Cobia have been making appearances. Top bait choices include WA Pilchards, Whole large Squid, Mullet Fillet, Bonito Fillet, and live Yakka’s and Slimy Mackerel.

Mud Crab Excitement After Rain

Recent rain stirred up the waters just enough to yield good hauls of Mud Crabs. Strategic pot placement is key, and popular spots include the North Arm or South Arm of the Coomera River, the Pimpama River, Paradise Point, and more. Fresh baits like Mullet, Eel, or fish frames are recommended, and it should be emphasised that it is important to change bait regularly.

Whiting Adventures and Tackling Windy Conditions

Anticipating windier conditions? Consider trying your luck for Whiting up the rivers, where good numbers have been consistently caught. Bloodworms, Beach Worms, and Yabbies are excellent bait choices. Moving around to find actively feeding schools is advised, with ideal spots including the Coomera River North and South Arms, Pimpama River, Logan River, and more.

Mangrove Jack Tactics in Hot Conditions

Paul Whilshire has been having some great trips in the rivers latley catching and releasing this solid Mangrove Jack on the Gold Coast

The hot and humid weather has ignited the Mangrove Jack bite. Stormy weather enhances their feeding frenzy, while a cool change can make them more selective. Patience and persistence are crucial when targeting areas with good structure, such as Rock Walls, Bridges, and Jetties. Live baits like Mullet, Herring, Garfish, Pike, and Silver Biddies, as well as dead baits like Mullet Fillet and Bonito Fillet, are recommended for a successful catch.

As you prepare for the weekend, keep these insights in mind for a memorable fishing adventure.

The past week on the Gold and Tweed Coasts brought forth a challenging mix of storms, rain squalls, and consistent northerly winds, creating an unstable weather pattern. However, in between these bouts of weather, anglers found opportunities to venture out and pursue their favourite catch. As we look ahead to the weekend, the forecast indicates lingering rain, making conditions a bit unpredictable. Sunday seems to be the most promising day, with easing swells and lighter winds, albeit with some showers in the forecast. Always stay informed with the latest weather updates before setting out on your fishing expedition.

Offshore Adventures: Snapper, Dolphin Fish, and More

Despite the weather challenges, offshore fishing has been rewarding for those who timed their outings well. Selecting the right weather window proved crucial, and Sunday appears to be the standout day with a favorable wind forecast. Noteworthy catches include a impressive 90cm Snapper by Terry Vince off the Gold Coast. The 36 and 50 fathom reefs, dependent on the current, have yielded good catches of Snapper, Pearl Perch, Tusk Fish, Yellow Tail Kingfish, Amberjack, and Samson. Fads in the same depths have attracted Dolphin fish. In closer proximity, the 18 and 24 fathoms reefs have seen success with Snapper, Moses Perch, Tusk Fish, Trag Jew, Maori Cod, and Spotted Mackerel making an early-season appearance. Recommended baits include live Yakka’s, Slimy Mackerel, WA Pilchards, Whole Large Squid, Bonito Fillet, and Mullet Fillet.

Whiting Wonders: Pursuing Feeds in Rainy Conditions

For those targeting Whiting, the week has offered favorable conditions, despite potential disruptions from rain. Locations such as the Nerang River, Currumbin Creek, Tallebudgera Creek, and others have produced good results. Live Bloodworms, Beachworms, and Yabbies have proven effective as bait. A light rod with a sensitive tip and the right tackle, including a 6 to 9lb mainline, 6lb fluorocarbon trace, 3 or 4 ball sinker, and a bait holder hook, enhance the chances of a successful catch.

Mangrove Jacks and Predators: Exploring River Fishing Opportunities

Mangrove Jack fishing has been fruitful in the Nerang and Coomera Rivers, with good schools of Herring and Mullet attracting predators. Targeting jetties, pontoons, bridges, and rock walls in these areas has proven successful. Techniques such as casting hard body lures or Zman minnows, along with bait fishing using Live or well-presented dead baits like Herring, Mullet, Silver Biddies, and Pike, have yielded positive results.

Shark Adventures: Chasing Bulls in Unsettled Waters

Given the current weather conditions, targeting Bull Sharks presents an exciting option. These predators are actively hunting bait in various waterways, offering a thrilling experience for anglers. A medium to heavy estuary combo with 20 to 30lb mono or braided line, a nylon-coated wire trace (50 to 100lb), and a size 6 to 9 hook, paired with freshwater eel or pike eel bait, is recommended. Popular spots include the Coomera River, Saltwater Creek, Paradise Point, local canals, Nerang River, Pimpama River, Jacobs Well, and the Logan River. However, handling sharks requires caution due to their sharp teeth and unpredictable behaviour. Be sure to follow bag and size limits and handle them responsibly for a potential tasty treat if handled properly.

Weekend Weather Overview

After a pleasant weekend, the week on the Gold and Tweed Coasts started with some much-needed rain. Although the rainfall was less than expected, the runoff is anticipated to positively impact local waterways. Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday appears to be the optimal day with a small offshore swell and light NE winds, transitioning to N/NE later. Stay updated with the latest weather forecast before heading out.

Inshore Fishing Opportunities

Geordie with a big Whiting caught by trolling a Samaki redic lure with Gold Coast River Charters
Geordie with a big Whiting caught by trolling a Samaki redic lure with Gold Coast River Charters

The recent rain is beneficial for the rivers and estuaries, providing a flush-out effect. This stirs up bait, attracting various species like Trevally, Tailor, Grunter, Bream, Tarwhine, Jewfish, and Moses Perch. Focus on river and canal entrances, moving up main channels in search of bait schools. Use a mix of lures, including Soft Plastics, Vibes, Micro Jigs, and Metal Slugs. Fishing at the current lines where dirty water meets clean water can be productive, especially during tide transitions.

Offshore Fishing Highlights

Offshore fishing has been fruitful with the current easing back, allowing for successful bottom fishing on the wider reefs. The 36 and 50 fathom reefs have seen good catches of Snapper, Pearl Perch, Tusk Fish, Yellow Tail Kingfish, Amber Jack, and Samson. Fads are holding Dolphin Fish. Best baits include live bait, WA Pilchards, Squid, Bonito Fillet, and Mullet Fillet. Early starts are crucial for offshore trips.

Mangrove Jack and Warm Weather

With warming weather, targeting Mangrove Jack becomes a good option. Look for structure in areas like the Tweed River, Nerang River, and Coomera River System. Live baits such as Herring, Silver Biddies, and Mullet work well, while lure enthusiasts can experiment with soft plastics, hard body lures, and surface walkers.

Mud Crabbing Post-Rain

After recent rain, consider throwing in crab pots for Mud Crabs, particularly in the upper reaches of local rivers. Fresh bait like Whole Mullet, Fish Frames, and Chicken pieces are effective. The rain may stimulate crab movement, providing a chance for a successful crabbing session.

Quotes from the Boats

Ben White had a great day off the Gold Coast landing this fantastic Jewfish

The early mornings began with sounding some deep holes around the tide changes and I must admit they were pretty quiet, but we did manage to deep water jig a few Flatties and a few Jewies. The next technique on the agenda was to start some trolling with pontoon 21 crackjacks, hurricane slams and samaki redic df 50 jerkbaits depending on the depth profiles of the river. These 3 lures all dive to a slightly different depths and I like to match the lures to the depth of the areas i am trolling so that they are always tapping and skimming across the bottom. It is vital that your lures are hitting the bottom especially if you are targeting Flathead, Bream and Whiting which we also caught this week.

Clint from Brad Smith Fishing Charters/Gold Coast River Charters reports

Quality Whiting again this week, plus school Flathead, Spotted Grunter, Barred Grunter, and a few Giant and Tealeaf Trevally. We mostly fished the middle area of Nerang River and the Southern end of the Broadwater where there is large schools of Winter Whiting which readily attack prawn blades including Ecogear ZX’s and TT switchprawns. For the Sand Whiting and Flathead Samaki Redic 50 lures have been deadly. The best colours were coral trout and gold assassin. Each time there is a S/SE wind change the water cools a few degrees. It looks like more showers and storms on the way this week, which is good. It staves off drought and fire risk, and flushed and fires up the river fishing. We have neap phase of the moon this week, then lead up to full moon which is 27 November.”

Fishing Adventures Around The Gold Coast

Weekend Weather and Fishing Conditions

Brett Doolan had a great day catching and releasing this cracking Flathead on the Gold Coast
Brett Doolan had a great day catching and releasing this cracking Flathead on the Gold Coast

Last weekend provided favourable conditions for anglers, attracting many to the waters for a great time. However, this week presented a mix of challenges, including strong SE and Northerly winds, occasional storms, and a rising swell along the Gold and Tweed Coast. As we look ahead to the weekend, Saturday’s conditions are more suited for sheltered waters with predicted SE winds. Sunday seems to be the prime day, with winds easing and shifting to the ENE, accompanied by a drop in swell. It’s advisable to check the latest weather forecast before heading out.

Offshore Fishing Highlights

Picking the right weather window was crucial for offshore excursions this week due to varied wind conditions. Anglers who chose wisely found success in the close reefs (18 to 24 fathom depth range), yielding good-sized Snapper, Jewfish, Tusk Fish, Moses Perch, Trag Jew, Maori Cod, and Spangled Emperor. On the 36 and 50 fathom grounds, Snapper, Tusk Fish, Pearl Perch, Pig Fish, Yellow Tail Kingfish, Amberjack, and Samson were abundant, conditions permitting. Fads continued to attract quality Dolphin Fish, with success depending on the day’s fishing pressure.

Whiting and Summer Fishing Tips

Whiting fishing has been rewarding, with notable catches, including impressive specimens during nighttime trips. As summer approaches, fishing is expected to improve, emphasizing the importance of planning trips around decent tides. Live bait, Bloodworms, Beachworms, and Yabbies are recommended, along with light gear and patient fishing. Key spots include Tweed River, Tallebudgera Creek, Currumbin Creek, and others with good tidal flow and uneven bottoms.

Flathead Fishing Insights

Julie did well and caught some excellent flatties at the Tweed River with Brad Smith Fishing Charters

Flathead fishing has seen success, especially with favourable tides on the weekend. Morning pursuits in shallow areas atop sandbanks, followed by focusing on sandbank edges, creek mouths, and gutters during the run-out tide, have been productive. Various lures such as soft plastics, glide baits, surface lures, hard bodies, and soft vibes have been effective, as well as drifting with live bait or White pilchards, Blue Bait, WA pilchards, or Mullet Fillet.

Tailor Action Around Bait Schools

Bait schools are scattered across the Broadwater and Jumpinpin areas, attracting Tailor. The last two hours of the run-in tide and the first hour of the run-out tide are prime times to spot Tailor. Trolling hard body lures, casting metal slugs, and using surface lures, matching the size of the baitfish, are recommended tactics in areas such as the Gold Coast Seaway, Currigee Channel, Jumpinpin Bar mouth, Kalinga Bank, Crusoe Island, and the mouth of Whalley’s Gutter.

A Bounty of Blessings: Fishing Adventures Around The Gold Coast

Perfect Conditions

Last week, fortune smiled upon the Gold and Tweed Coasts, showering anglers with a rare stretch of impeccable weather. Gentle easterly winds and a calm swell created optimal conditions, inviting fishing enthusiasts to revel in quality fishing moments. As we peek into the upcoming weekend, Saturday appears to be the prime day, with light NE winds and a small swell. However, a word to the wise: always check the latest weather forecast before setting sail.

Offshore

After grappling with unruly winds and swells, offshore anglers finally enjoyed a fantastic week. The good news extends into the forecast, predicting another excellent Saturday for offshore adventures. Venturing to the 36 and 50 fathom grounds proved fruitful, with FADS harboring impressive numbers of Dolphin Fish. Early risers have the upper hand, as the first boats often secure the choicest catches. Live baits, WA pilchards, soft plastics, and surface walkers have all proven effective. And if conditions allow, expect a medley of Snapper, Pearl Perch, Tusk Fish, Pig Fish, Yellow Tail Kingfish, Amberjack, and Samson at the 36 and 50 fathom reefs.

Inshore

Closer to shore, the 18 and 24 fathom reefs have been a hotspot for big Snapper, offering a mixed bag including Moses Perch, Tusk Fish, Maori Cob, Trag Jew, Cobia, and sizable Silver Jew. Early starts are key for the dawn bite, and a thorough scan with the sounder enhances your chances. Best baits include live Yakka’s, Slimy Mackerel, WA Pilchards, whole large Squid, Mullet Fillet, and Bonito Fillet.

Flathead Frenzy

Flathead enthusiasts are in for a treat, with good catches spanning from the Tweed River North to Jumpinpin. The Gold Coast Sports Fish Club’s recent Dash for Cash showcased impressive catches, including 80cm plus models released with pride. Target these giants with large soft glide bait soft plastics, sizable hard body lures, and surface walkers in shallow waters. Drift with the current for bait options like White Pilchards, WA Pilchards, Mullet Fillet, Prawns, and Yabbies. And remember, use a bit of leader material to combat the raspy nature of Flathead.

Quest for Mangrove Jack

As the temperature rises and recent rains stir up bait fish, this weekend is an opportune time to hunt for Mangrove Jack. Expect thrilling bycatches like Estuary Cod, Trevally, and Jewfish. Seek out spots with ample structure—rock walls, bridges, pylons, jetty’s, pontoons, rock bars, and sunken trees. Whether you prefer live bait, dead bait, or lures, the Jacks are ready for a feed.

Brad from Brad Smith Fishing Charters reports:

This was a very interesting week due to the fact that after sounding some of the deepest holes in the river the normal bait schools were absent. I usually like to mix things up a bit and do some deep-water jigging but when there is no bait showing on the bottom it is usually a waste of time. The reason for that being no bait concentrations due to the lack of life bringing rain. Our rivers need some badly to liven them up and my best wishes go out to the poor people that are suffering through the horrific bushfires that need the rain more than we do. So once again the good old trolling and covering as much ground proved to be the best technique. The hero lure for me this week while trolling was without a doubt the new Samaki Redic 50mm jerkbaits. This little minnow absolutely fired for me particularly in the crystal prawn colour and even more so bright orange coral trout colour. The lures caught a heap of fish and different species which included Flatties, Whiting, Bream, Flounder and wait for it Mullet. Mullet are not a renowned lure taker but they were smashing the lures and although they are not regarded as a great eating fish they are good fun and are a great fighting on light gear.”

Clint from Brad Smith Fishing Charters/Gold Coast River Charters reports:

Windy week with strong Northerlies followed by a Southerly change. Luckily the fish were still hungry in Nerang River and at Tweed River with plenty of quality Flathead, Grunter, and Whiting caught on Ecogear Zx’s, and trolling with Samaki Redic 50’s and Pontoon 21 crackjacks. The forecast this week is strengthening Northerlies until Wednesday then another S/SE change coming through then wind hopefully easing on Friday. Morning high tides and big run outs over the next few days, good for Flathead fishing throughout the river systems.

Weekend Fishing Forecast: Gold and Tweed Coasts

Overview

After a challenging week of strong winds and large swells, the Gold and Tweed Coasts are finally seeing an improvement in fishing conditions. As we approach the weekend, the wind is expected to ease from the E/NE and the swell is predicted to drop, creating ideal conditions for offshore fishing as well as exploring the Broadwater, Jumpinpin, and local rivers. Saturday is currently looking like the best day for fishing. Always ensure you have the most up-to-date weather forecast before heading out.

Offshore Fishing

Given the current forecast, conditions are looking very favourable for heading offshore. The 18 and 24 fathom grounds are recommended as the current may be strong out wide. An early start is crucial to beat the sunrise. Take time to locate both bait and larger fish on your sounder before choosing a spot. Float lining is the most productive method to fish baits, with Snapper, Moses Perch, Tusk Fish, Maori Cod, Trag Jew, Silver Jew, Cobia and Spangled Emperor likely catches. Best baits include live Yakkas, Slimy Mackerel or WA Pilchards, Squid, Mullet Fillet, Bonito Fillet and even Silver Trevally Fillets.

Inshore Fishing

Dave had a great day catching and releasing a heap of flatties with Brad Smith fishing Charters on the Tweed River

Fishers have found a few nice Tailor around Jumpinpin and the Gold Coast Seaway this week. The best time to look for a Tailor is during the last two hours of the run-in tide and the first hour of the run in. Keep an eye out for any activity that would indicate fish feeding like birds diving into the water or splashing on the water surface.

Whiting Fishing

Whiting have again been a good target option with windy conditions leading up to the full moon resulting in some great catches of quality fish. Live bloodworms have been the best bait followed by beach worms and yabbies. Timing your trip to avoid a tide change is a good idea if possible as Whiting bite best when there is plenty of tidal flow churning up the bottom.

So gear up and get ready for an exciting weekend of fishing! Remember to always check the latest weather forecast before heading out.

Quotes from  the Boats

Brad from Brad Smith Fishing Charters reports:

Once again it was a very windy week with the winds picking up 25 to 35 kms each day. As we do as fishing guides, we have to continuously overcome mother nature’s little tantrums and produce fish for our clients. Trolling the shallows where the wind was opposing the tide produced excellent results in the rough water. The rough water rolls the bottom over bringing up food and nutrients as well as discolours the water giving the bait a place to hide. It may sound eccentric to be fishing the roughest part of the river, but Clint and I have been doing it for years in fact Clint was doing the same thing in the Nerang river this week. Apart from trolling the shallows we had a couple of early morning starts before the wind came up and caught some Flatties and small School Jew in the deep holes. The fish caught this week were Flatties, Bream, Whiting and School Jew with pontoon 21 crackjack lures being the best lure. I also tried trolling the newly released samaki 50 mm redic minnows and they were outstanding so I will be trolling them again next week.

CLARKIE’S GC FISHING – Weather’s Influence on Fishing Conditions

[vc_row][vc_column][stm_post_animated_image][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1698900076573{border-radius: 1px !important;}”]

Weather’s Influence on Fishing Conditions

The weather has once again played a significant role in shaping fishing options on the Gold and Tweed Coast this week. Strong hot northerly winds at the start of the week, followed by an even stronger south/southeasterly change peaking on Friday, brought with it a massive swell offshore and a few showers, making for less-than-ideal fishing conditions. Anglers had to seek sheltered spots to try their luck. As of the time of writing, the weekend ahead doesn’t look promising for fishing. It might be a good time to sort out your fishing gear, visit your local tackle shop, or perform some boat maintenance. Always check the most up-to-date weather forecast before heading out. Now, let’s delve into what’s been biting.

Offshore Adventures

Ben White had a great day last weekend scoring a great feed of Snapper
Ben White had a great day last weekend scoring a great feed of Snapper

The weather last Saturday turned out better than forecasted. Boats that ventured offshore early were rewarded with good-sized Snapper being landed from the 18 to 24 fathom reefs off the Seaway. However, with the current forecast, offshore fishing will be off-limits over the coming weekend. When the wind eases and the swell drops, it will be an excellent time to head out, especially after a big swell, as it tends to stir up the fish on the shallow reefs. The Gold Coast Seaway is a notable spot for catching some sizeable Snapper. In closer waters, the 18 to 24 fathom reefs have been productive, offering a variety of species, including Snapper, Silver Jew, Moses Perch, Trag Jew, Maori Cod, Spangled Emperor, Tusk Fish, and the occasional Cobia. As the water temperature rises, we can expect Mackerel to make an appearance. Further out on the 36 and 50 fathom grounds, there have been plenty of Dolphin Fish near the fish aggregating devices (fads). They’ve been taking live baits, WA Pilchards, soft plastics, and surface lures.

Flathead Fishing Extravaganza

The Wilson Elite Flathead series recently concluded on the Gold Coast, showcasing the fantastic fishery the Coast has to offer. Teams competing caught and released numerous Flathead, some reaching up to the mid-80cm size range. Flathead fishing has been excellent this year, and as the breeding season winds down and the water temperature rises, the fish will disperse more throughout the local waterways. While you may need to explore a bit more to find better numbers, there will still be plenty of fish available. Trolling hard body lures in shallower water depths is an effective way to locate fish. Key areas like Wave Break Island, Crab Island, Rat Island, Brown Island, Coomera River, Aldershots, Neverfails, Jacobs Well, Tiger Mullet Channel, Cabbage Tree Point, Logan River, and Russell Island are all prime spots to try your luck. Keep an eye out for bait, as fish tend to hang around the general area, waiting for a passing feed. Other successful methods include casting soft plastics, working soft vibes, fishing the shallows with surface lures, and using larger swim baits and big hard bodies for the chance of landing a big fish.

Sand Crab Bounty

The past week has seen some promising catches of Sand Crabs. For those willing to put in the effort to set pots around the Broadwater and Jumpinpin area, better numbers of good-sized crabs have been available. Leaving pots out overnight can be a gamble due to sharefarmers, but the longer you can soak the pots, the better the results tend to be. Target the edges of sandbanks, weed beds, and the drop-offs to the main channels where crabs often move through. Mullet and fresh fish frames make excellent bait, and using a bait bag is a smart idea to prevent small fish, eels, and crabs from stealing the bait.

Summer Species on the Rise

Ash caught and released his first Mangrove Jack of the season in the Coomera River
Ash caught and released his first Mangrove Jack of the season in the Coomera River

The warmer weather has started to fire up the summer species, with consistent catches of Mangrove Jack in recent weeks. It’s worth noting that the southeast change can make fish more lethargic, resulting in a slower bite. Despite this, the rivers currently hold good schools of herring, which make excellent bait for Mangrove Jack. These baits have also attracted Estuary Cod and nice-sized Trevally in the same areas. There are numerous land-based fishing options, including the Nerang River, local canal systems, Coomera River, Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, and the Logan River, where you can find Jacks and other species. Mullet, Silver Biddies, and Whiting are great live baits for these predatory fish. Look for areas with plenty of structure like rock walls, bridges, pylons, jetties, pontoons, and submerged trees to increase your chances of success.

Despite challenging weather conditions, there are still opportunities for a successful fishing trip along the Gold and Tweed Coast. Stay informed, adapt to the changing conditions, and enjoy your time on the water.

Gold Coast Fishing:  A Challenging Week on the Gold and Tweed Coasts

The past week has been a tough one for anglers on the Gold and Tweed Coasts, with relentless south winds making fishing conditions less than ideal. However, there’s hope on the horizon, and we’ll will guide you through the best fishing options for the upcoming weekend. Saturday morning appears to be the prime time to hit the water before the winds shift again on Sunday. Let’s explore the possibilities for the weekend ahead.

Targeting Flathead: A Reliable Choice

Wal caught this nice Flathead on a TT switchprawn lure while on a trip with Clint from Gold Coast River Charters
Wal caught this nice Flathead on a TT switchprawn lure while on a trip with Clint from Gold Coast River Charters

Flathead fishing remains a solid option despite challenging conditions.

  • After the Flathead Classic, many quality fish have been caught in the area.
  • High tide around mid-day provides an excellent opportunity for morning shallow-water fishing.
  • Target big Flathead by casting soft plastics, swim baits, and hard body lures using an electric motor or anchor for precision.
  • Watch for signs of baitfish and bird activity, which can indicate prime fishing spots.
  • As the tide recedes, focus on areas where water flows off the sandbanks, such as drains and creek mouths.
  • Employ a combination of soft plastics, soft vibes, and trolling with the current to maximize your chances.

Whiting Fishing Success in Windy Conditions

Tom did well catching a nice Whiting up the Nerang River fishing with Wayne Young

Whiting fishing remains fruitful despite strong winds.

  • Find sheltered corners in your local river or canal to escape the relentless winds.
  • Anchor your boat in shallower waters with fast-moving tides to stir up the bait.
  • Use high-quality bait such as blood worms, beach worms, or yabbies for better results.
  • Keep moving if you haven’t had success after 20 minutes in one spot.
  • Explore areas like the Tweed River, Currumbin Creek, and more for Whiting fishing.
  • Equip yourself with a light and long rod and reel combo, a 6lb fluorocarbon trace, and a small bait holder hook.

Hunting Mangrove Jack, Estuary Cod, and Trevally

Warmer temperatures offer a chance to target Mangrove Jack, Estuary Cod, and Trevally.

  • Focus your efforts around structures that attract these species, such as bridges, rock walls, jetties, pontoons, and submerged trees.
  • Live baits are a great choice, but also experiment with a mix of soft plastics, hard body lures, and surface lures for variety.

While the past week presented challenges, the upcoming weekend promises fishing opportunities for those willing to adapt to changing conditions. Whether you’re after Flathead, Whiting, or more elusive catches like Mangrove Jack and Trevally, the Gold and Tweed Coasts offer a diverse range of options for anglers. So, gear up, plan your strategy, and make the most of your time on the water. Happy fishing!

Brad from Brad Smith Fishing Charters reports:

Here we are again at the end of another week and to be honest it was a pretty tough week when it comes to the fishing. Constant raging winds from the northwest to northeast then the southeast blew like crazy making it hard to fish the areas that I would have liked to fish. Match this with the fact that we have not received any life bringing rain made me have to work very hard for both the fish and my clients. Through hard work combined with persistence, and the knowledge of protected areas out of the howling winds we still managed as always to land some pretty nice fish. The species caught this week were Flatties, Bream, Whiting, Flounder, School Jew and Grunter and one very tiny Mangrove Jack.

Clint from Brad Smith Fishing Charters/Gold Coast River Charters reports:

I had to work very hard to find fish on my charters this week, but we did catch Dusky Flathead, Bar tail Flathead, Fringe Eye Flathead, Jew, Sand Whiting, Winter Whiting, Gold Line Whiting, Flounder, Squire, Bream, Tarwhine, Grassy Sweetlip and Arrow Squid. Best lures were Ecogear ZX40, TT switchprawn, Samaki Vibelicious, and TT Quake. Yabbies and beach worms worked well on the Whiting. Let’s hope the fishing improves next week, I’ll go looking for Sand Whiting and Flathead.

Gavin from Sea Probe Fishing Charters reports:

“There are still some nice Snapper, Kingfish and Amberjack out on the 50 fathoms using live bait and floating pilchards., Dolphin fish were very quiet this week but always still try for them doesn’t take long for a school to find the fads again and also in close plenty of Jewfish and nice size Snapper taken on live baits.
